Time and Location (Note Change for Monday to Newport News):

There are two separate sessions for Expository Preaching - Friday through Sunday 7-9 June 2013 and Monday through Tuesday 10-11 June 2013. We've added the option of Monday-Tuesday to better accommodate the full time staff who find it more difficult to attend over the weekend. 

The Friday-Sunday classes will all take place at Old Dominion University's Constant Hall at 49th Street and Hampton Blvd in Norfolk VA. Friday's classes begin at 6:45pm and end at 9:30pm. Saturday's classes begin at 9am and end at 6pm with a two hour lunch break. Sunday's classes begin at 2pm and end at 4:30pm.

  • Friday 6:45-9:30p: Selecting the Biblical Text, Studying the Text, Determining the Big Idea, Sermon Purpose
  • Saturday 9am-12n: Sermon Styles, The Outline, Illustrations, Transitions, Applications, Intro&Conclusion, How to Deliver a Sermon
  • Saturday 2-6p: Preaching Lab
  • Sunday 2-4:30p: Preaching Lab

The Monday classes will take place at Hampton Roads Church's Newport News Campus at 86 Maxwell Lane, and Tuesday classes will all take place at Hampton Roads Church's Virginia Beach campus at 2520 Holland Road. Both days are scheduled 9am-5:30pm with a two hour lunch break.

  • Monday PM: Sermon Styles, The Outline, Illustrations, Transitions, Applications, Intro&Conclusion, How to Deliver a Sermon
  • Tuesday AM: Preaching Lab

Biblical Preaching by Haddon Robinson. You can quickly access this book (and other recommended books on preaching) in the sidebar to the left.

Before you come to class on June 7 (for TentMakers and college students attending 7-9 June) or June 10 (for full time ministers and interns attending 10-11 June), complete the following prerequites: 

  1. Read Biblical Preaching by Haddon Robinson
  2. Watch the lecture videos on Biblical Preaching (available here after May 10, 2013)
  3. Prepare a short document based on the outline below

ALSO - - Please complete a short document which will include your Sermon Outline (as per the book's recommendation) as well as the following information:

  1. Your sermon's Big Idea (exegetical),
  2. Big Idea (homiletical), 
  3. A quick analysis of your audience's needs
  4. Sermon Purpose (what moral change do you strive to affect)
  5. Sermon Style (and why you chose that style)

Be ready to hand in this document with your sermon outline and discuss it during class. Also be ready to preach a 5 minute section of your sermon (assuming that your sermon will be approximately 25-40 minutes in total length).
